EMC SR-71: The Fastest Urwerk Yet

EMC is back! First unveiled in 2014, this groundbreaking watch, the only one in the world that allows the wearer to adjust the accuracy of the movement, has now been re-issued and improved. The new version features a piece from the legendary American stealth aircraft Blackbird SR-71, which was able to cruise at an astonishing Mach 3 (3,700 km/h).

Nietzsche had a lot to say about memory. In general, he believed that forgetting was necessary, that you had to be able to forget things in order to get rid of the past. Urwerk disagreed. In 2014, the watchmaking workshops sparked a small revolution that still has an impact today. EMC (Electronic Mechanical Control) was born. The concept is simple: allow the user to monitor the speed at which the Urwerk is running and make adjustments themselves if necessary - tasks that traditionally have been performed by watchmakers.

One watch, two movements

To achieve this, the EMC is equipped with two movements. The first is a purely mechanical movement that displays hours, minutes, seconds and power reserve in the usual way. The second is more like a quartz movement, oscillating at an astonishing 16 million Hz. This is the reference movement. It doesn't tell time, but thanks to its amazing rate, it can measure intervals of 10 microseconds. An optical sensor compares this ultra-precise timekeeping with the conventional 4 Hz frequency of a mechanical movement. The resulting difference - anywhere from -20 to +20 seconds - is displayed on a counter at 10 o'clock. A small screw on the back of the watch allows the mechanical movement to be adjusted, closing the gap and bringing the difference as close to zero as possible.

To mark the 10th anniversary of this ingenious invention, Urwerk unveils 10 pieces of the newly painted machine: the SR-71. While this aviation reference may not catch everyone's attention immediately, its nickname "Blackbird" certainly does. This American stealth aircraft, capable of cruising speeds of up to Mach 3, remained in service until 1990. The parts of the surviving aircraft are classified, and its military secrets are closely guarded by the US Army and, as Urwerk assures us, "the CIA".

Stealth Design

The right side of the EMC SR-71 features a lever (a generator for charging the EMC module) made from an authentic piece of the SR-71 body. This rare alloy was brought to Urwerk by two enthusiasts who had the raw material and also happened to own EMC watches of their own. The idea to combine the two was first mooted in 2020 and took three years to realize. That’s how long it took to design new components to combine with the melted body, and how long it took to produce a new batch of EMC movements, which have been sold out for years.

This latest EMC version has a 47 x 49 mm black titanium case on a khaki NATO-style strap. Its hand-wound twin-spring movement offers an 80-hour power reserve.
